Slab Sizes Explained: Standard, Jumbo, and What Actually Fits in a Container
Slab dimensions drive yield, price per usable square meter, and how many bundles ship per container. A working reference for fabricators and trade buyers.
Two slabs of the same stone, same finish, same thickness can behave completely differently in a project because of one variable: format. A 280x160 cm standard slab and a 330x195 cm jumbo are priced differently per square meter, cut differently at the shop, and load differently into a shipping container. Suppliers quote dimensions constantly, but the size classes behind those numbers, and what they mean for freight and yield, are rarely written down. This guide covers the three size classes in commercial circulation, the weight math, and the container constraints that decide what you can actually order.
The three size classes
There is no ISO standard for slab dimensions; the classes below are commercial conventions that producers and importers use day to day. Dimensions are length by height as the slab stands on the A-frame.
- Standard: roughly 240 to 280 cm long, 140 to 160 cm high. The default output for most marble and travertine blocks, and the format most fabrication shops are tooled around
- Jumbo: roughly 280 to 320 cm long, 160 to 190 cm high. Common in granite and quartzite, where blocks come out of the quarry larger and more cohesive
- Super jumbo (oversize): 320 cm and longer, 190 cm and higher. A premium format cut from exceptional blocks, used for seamless kitchen islands, large bookmatch walls, and facade panels
Why sizes vary by stone type
Slab format is decided at the quarry, not at the gang saw. A slab can never be larger than the block it was cut from, and block size depends on how the deposit fractures. Granite and quartzite deposits typically yield large, structurally sound blocks, which is why jumbo is almost the default in those materials.
Marble blocks run smaller on average, and premium white marbles are often quarried in sizes that produce standard-format slabs. Travertine is the most constrained: its layered, porous structure limits both block size and the safe handling size of a cut slab, so most travertine ships in standard format.
This is also why 'jumbo' costs more per square meter within the same stone family. The quarry produces fewer blocks capable of yielding it, and every handling step from gang saw to container carries more breakage risk at that size.
Thickness, weight, and the numbers that matter
Weight per square meter depends on thickness and density. These are the working figures used across the trade:
- Marble and granite, 2 cm: roughly 55 kg per sqm
- Marble and granite, 3 cm: roughly 82 kg per sqm
- Travertine, 2 cm: roughly 48 to 50 kg per sqm (lower density, partially filled voids)
- A single standard 280x160 slab at 2 cm: about 250 kg
- A single super jumbo 330x195 slab at 3 cm: over 500 kg, a two-crane-point lift
What fits in a shipping container
Natural stone ships almost exclusively in 20-foot containers because weight, not space, is the binding constraint. A 20-foot box has a payload limit of about 28 tonnes; at 2 cm that is roughly 450 to 500 sqm of marble, and at 3 cm closer to 300 to 340 sqm, before space even becomes a question.
Space takes over as the constraint when formats grow. Slabs travel strapped to A-frame bundles, and the loading geometry is strict. Our own container loading engine enforces the same limits a surveyor applies at the port:
- Maximum bundle height 210 cm: anything taller cannot clear the container door safely
- Maximum bundle length 360 cm: longer bundles cannot rotate into position inside the box
- Four bundle rows across the container width, each on a roughly 55 cm footprint
- Small-format bundles load up to 10 per container; true jumbo formats drop that to 4 or 5, and weight usually caps the load before space does
Standard vs jumbo: the yield math
Format choice is a yield calculation, not a prestige one. A 320x160 cm kitchen island top cannot be cut from a 280x160 slab at any price; it needs jumbo, and buying jumbo for that project eliminates a seam the client would otherwise see every day.
The reverse also holds. Cutting standard 60x60 tiles or modest vanity tops from super jumbo slabs pays a premium per square meter for format you immediately saw into pieces. As a rule: large single-piece elements (islands, shower walls, bookmatch features, reception desks) justify jumbo; repetitive small-piece work almost never does.
When comparing quotes, always convert to price per usable square meter for your specific cut list, not the per-sqm list price. A cheaper standard slab with 30 percent waste on your island layout is more expensive than a jumbo with 12 percent waste.
The hidden costs of jumbo
Jumbo formats carry costs that never appear on the proforma. Shops need wider saws, larger CNC beds, and rated lifting clamps; not every fabricator can receive a 500 kg slab. Site access matters too: a super jumbo island top may need a crane or window removal to enter the building, and some municipalities restrict the truck sizes that can deliver it.
Breakage risk also scales with format. A jumbo slab has more unsupported span during every lift, and a single crack converts the entire premium into loss. Reputable producers crate super jumbo slabs individually or in two-slab bundles for exactly this reason. When a project genuinely needs oversize material, budget the handling chain end to end before ordering.
Reading sizes on a packing list
Packing lists state dimensions per slab, but bundles are summarized by their envelope: the maximum length and height across the slabs inside. A bundle listed at 280x160 may contain slabs of 278x158, 280x155, and 275x160. The envelope is what determines container loading; the per-slab net dimensions are what determine your yield.
Watch for gross versus net area. Gross (or 'invoice') dimensions round up to the next 5 or 10 cm and include irregular edges; net is the rectangle you can actually cut from. A 5 percent gap between the two is normal; a 12 percent gap deserves a question before payment.
