What is travertine?
Travertine is a sedimentary stone formed where mineral-rich spring water deposits calcium carbonate in layers. It belongs to the limestone family, not the marble family, but most quarry and factory paperwork still calls it marble, so read that word on a commercial document as a category label rather than a geological claim. Types of travertine
Five colour families carry the trade: classic (ivory), noce (walnut), silver, gold and red. Colour comes from iron and other trace minerals present at deposition, and one block can yield more than one commercial name depending on the band a slab falls in. Two producers can both invoice "Classic" and ship visibly different material, so the name is a starting point and the batch photos are the contract. Where you can, take a container from one block run: consistency inside the lot matters more than the label on it.
- Classic / ivory: pale cream to beige with soft banding, the volume specification for large areas.
- Noce / walnut: mid to dark brown with warm movement, used for feature floors and dark wall cladding.
- Silver: grey to charcoal with tight linear banding, specified for contemporary facades and commercial interiors.
- Gold: honey to amber tones with strong warm veining, used for feature walls and lobby cladding.
- Red: rust to terracotta with dense mineral movement, low-volume material for accents rather than whole elevations.
Vein-cut vs cross-cut travertine
Vein-cut is sawn across the bedding planes and reads as straight linear striations; cross-cut is sawn parallel to the bedding and reads as a rounded, cloud-like figure. The cut also decides how the pores present: vein-cut opens elongated channels along the face, cross-cut opens rounder, more evenly spread voids. Mixing the two in one continuous surface reads as an error to anyone standing in front of it. They are effectively two products from the same block, so specify the cut on the order and hold it across the whole quantity.

Filled vs unfilled travertine
Filled travertine has its natural voids grouted with resin or cement before the face is finished; unfilled leaves those pores open. Filling is a processing decision, not a grade. Fill quality is the single biggest variable between suppliers: good fill is colour-matched, fully seated and level with the face, poor fill sinks, shrinks, discolours or pops out during handling. Ask what the fill is, check the back face too because a slab filled only on the front keeps losing material at the edges, and expect fabricators to top up pinholes that open during cutting.

Travertine finishes
Finish is applied after filling and drives colour depth, slip behaviour and how visible the fill is. Honed carries the commercial volume in slab form; tumbled, brushed and split-face are texture treatments used mainly on exteriors and cladding. Polished travertine is available but less common than on marble, because open pores interrupt the gloss and weak fill shows. Agree the finish in writing alongside the cut and hold it across the order: the same stone in two finishes reads as two different materials on site.
- Honed: flat matte face with even tone, the default for interior floors and stair treads.
- Tumbled: softened edges and a worn face, used for rustic paving and pool surrounds.
- Brushed: lightly textured face from abrasive brushing, specified where matte grip is needed outdoors.
- Polished: reflective face that deepens colour and exposes weak fill, used on walls and reception areas.
- Split-face: rough cleft surface with heavy relief, used for exterior cladding and decorative wall panels.
Turkish travertine
Turkish travertine is the reference material for most of the international slab trade, and Denizli and Burdur are the two principal producing regions. Denizli carries the volume: most of the classic ivory and beige families, plus the silver and noce selections importers know by name. Burdur travertine runs to light cream and beige and holds tone across blocks, which is what makes repeat orders realistic, but a good deal of the beige shipped out of Burdur is marble rather than travertine, so confirm the material on the specification. Travertine applications
Interior floors are the volume application, normally filled and honed; interior wall cladding is forgiving because loads are low, and vein-cut lets you hold one direction across a full elevation. For ventilated facades, check the fixing system against slab thickness and specify 3 cm where the anchor detail needs margin, since travertine is softer than granite. Pool coping and surrounds are a long-standing use because light travertine heats less in direct sun than dark stone, but they are cut-to-size products: fabricators buy slabs at 2 cm or 3 cm and profile them in their own shops. Travertine vs marble vs limestone
All three are calcium carbonate stones: limestone is the sedimentary base rock, travertine is a limestone laid down by mineral spring water, and marble is limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure. In practice marble is denser and takes a higher polish, limestone is uniform and close-grained, and travertine is the only one of the three with open voids that call for filling. All three are softer than granite and react to acids, so fabrication, sealing and site protection follow limestone practice, not granite practice. When a project compares travertine against marble, settle the cut and fill first, because those drive the finished result more than the species name does.
